3月9日のサークル

Lesson 5 の続きです。

at that rate / at the rate someone is going -- その（今の）調子では

Stop dragging ass and get dressed! You'll never make it to school on time at that rate. Don’t think that if you miss the bus that I’m going to give in and let you stay home today, because you’re going to school one way or another.You’ve already missed too many days and that’s why you can’t catch up with the rest of your class.

いつまでもダラダラしてないで着替えなさい！そんなんじゃ学校に間に合わないでしょ。学校にはどうしたって行かなくてはいけないんだから、スクールバスに間に合わなければ今日は家に居させてもらえるとか思わない事ね。学校休んでばっかりいるからクラスのみんなに付いていけないんでしょう！

drag ass -- ぐずぐずする (= procrastinate)
one way or another --- どうにかして (ある方法がダメなら、別の方法で）
give in --- 折れる　屈服する

I yell at my son all day to study harder, but everything I tell him goes in one ear and out the other. It's so nerve-racking. He's not going to make it into a decent college　at this rate. He's going to end up bagging groceries for the rest of his life.

息子に勉強もっと頑張れと毎日怒鳴ってるんだけど、何を言っても右耳から左耳に筒抜けでイライラする。このままじゃ名の通った大学になんか受かりっこない。一生レジの袋詰め係ってとこね。

nerve-racking -- イライラさせる。

My wife is so wasteful with money. She's a shopaholic and she buys all kinds of clothes that just sit in the closet with the tags still on them. I swear she has a pair of shoes for every day of the year. At the rate we’re going, we’ll never have the money to buy a house.

私の妻は金遣いが荒い。買い物狂いで洋服は買いまくって正札付きのままでクローゼットに溜まっている。靴なんて毎日新しい靴を一年間履けるくらいあるに違いない。こんな調子じゃ家を買う金なんて絶対貯まらない。

the money -- the が付くことで、その後に続く "to buy a house" の等価のニュアンスを含む

At the rate I'm going, I'll get through writing my term paper 2 weeks before it's due.
このペースで行けば、期末レポートは期限の２週間前には書き終わるな。。。

get through --- finish

You always give up too easy. Football, basketball, now soccer? You’ll never be　good at anything at that rate. Everything takes practice.

お前はいつも簡単に諦めすぎだ。アメフト、バスケ、こんどはサッカーもか。そんな調子じゃなにやっても上達しないぞ。なにをするにしても練習は大切なんだ。
