Lesson 5 の続き（長かった Lesson 5 もあと少しで終わりです）

look up : (言葉等を）調べる

look up と言うと "look up the word in the dictionary" 「辞書で調べる」とひとつおぼえで記憶していて、なんでこれが「調べる」なんだろうとか深く考えませんでしたが、先日読んでいた前置詞の解説本には、「紙面や表に書き留められた(down)情報から必要な情報を目で探して拾い上げる(up) 」のだと書いてあって目からウロコでした。だから IN the dictionary なんですね。

It's taking me a long time to read this book. Every time I come across a word I don't know I have to stop reading and look it up in the dictionary. At this rate it's going to take me at least 10 years to finish reading it and give it back to you.

この本は読むのにすっごい時間かかる。わかんない言葉が出てくるたびに読むのを止めて辞書で調べないとならない。この調子だと読み終わってあなたに本を返すまでに少なくとも１０年は掛かるな

My mom is really bad at remembering numbers. Every time she wants to call someone she has to look up the number in her address book and it's unorganized and the names aren't in alphabetical order, so it takes her forever to find whosever number she's looking for. I told her she should put her important numbers on speed dial so she doesn't have to
look them up every time, but no, she won't listen to me.

私のお母さんは数字を覚えるのが苦手。誰かに電話をするのに毎回住所録で番号を調べなくちゃならない。またその住所録が整理が悪くてアルファベット順にもなっていないから、誰の番号を探すにしても死ぬほど時間がかかる。お母さんに、重要な番号は短縮ダイアルに登録しておけばいちいち探さなくていいでしょうと言った事があるんだけど、ダメ、私の言うことなんて聞こうとしない。。。

Back when I was a student we didn't have the internet. When we wrote essays we had to use encyclopedias and reference books to look up material. We had to do everything fair and square. You kids today have it way too easy. You just copy and paste everything and you're done.

私の学生時代にはインターネットなんて無かった。小論文書くには、百科事典や参考書で資料を検索しないとならなかった。何事もコツコツと正攻法で行くしかなかった。今の子供たちはそんなの超簡単。ネットのコピペで何でも出来上がり！

(fair and square = 正攻法で)

What's the number to the movie theater? I want to call and see what time the movie is showing.

• I'm too lazy to look it up. Why don't you just check the newspaper? They always have the movie times listed.

映画館の電話番号わかる？上映時間を問い合わせたいんだけど。
番号さがすの面倒くさい。新聞見てみなよ。新聞には映画の上映時間いつも載ってるよ。

It's easy to look words up in English, because all you have to do is know the alphabet and you can look up any word you want to, but it's not that easy in Japanese. If you can't read the kanji characters you have no way of knowing what letters to type to look up the word.

英語は調べるのが簡単。綴りさえわかっていれば、なんだって調べられるから。でも日本語はそうは行かない。漢字の読みがわからないと調べたい文字をどうやって出せばいいかすらわからない。

I love Wiki. I look stuff up on it all the time. My head is full of all sorts of useless facts, but at least I always have something to talk about whenever I have boring dinners with my relatives.

Wiki 大好き。いつも意味も無くいろんな事を調べてる。頭の中は役に立ちそうもない雑学知識でいっぱい。でも、親戚とのつまらない夕食会で話すネタには尽きないわ。

今月のサークルはこれでオシマイです。次回は4月6日です。その頃には桜咲いてるかなぁ。。。。

SM
